Red Hawk Ridge uses a balanced literacy model, meaning that students participate in shared, guided, interactive, and independent reading each day during our reading block.  Students read a variety of texts and genres found in our classroom libraries, Guided Reading Resource Room, media and magazines, and leveled texts in order to apply skills and strategies learned throughout the year and to build reading stamina and enjoyment.

Students also participate in literacy activities in other content areas, including math, science, and social studies.  We use formative and summative assessments to determine strengths and next steps for each student, and we follow integrated curriculum maps addressing the Colorado Academic Standards to ensure that all students have the opportunity and access to grade level standards every day.

We use the Mathematics Colorado Academic Standards in order to make year, unit, and daily plans for our students.  Along with Bridges, we utilize supplemental resources such as Fundamentals, Partner Games, Box of Facts, Math Navigations by NCTM, and the Math Learning Center.  Students participate in balanced math lessons each day, incorporating:  (1) problem solving and inquiry through rich problem solving tasks; (2) concept development and understanding through modeling and structured practice; (3) guided practice with grade level standards and scaffolding when needed; and (4) concept application with relevant experiences and problems.

Students write across the day at Red Hawk Ridge in all content areas, including reading, writing, math, social studies, and science.  Students focus on differing types of texts and develop their ideas and organization in narrative, informational, and opinion pieces.   We use Units of Study and other resources to help our students grow as writers and develop stamina, strategies, and skills to effectively communicate and craft their own texts.

Social Studies

Red Hawk Ridge, along with Cherry Creek School District, uses Social Studies Alive, History Alive, and Colorado Crossroads to teach the Colorado Academic Standards.  Students have access and opportunity to rich lessons and experiences within the areas of History, Economics, Geography, and Civics.  Social studies content is also integrated through the day during literacy and math.

Red Hawk Ridge, along with Cherry Creek School District, uses FOSS Science Kits in order to teach the Colorado Academic Standards.  Students participate in various inquiry-based, hands on activities and experiments that allow them to experience earth, physical, and life science learning first hand.   Students read and write about science concepts throughout the day as well.
